Power Rangers Premier Countdown: 20th Place goes too...

Power Rangers Jungle Fury Episode 31: Path of the Righteous

Why is this episode one of the best?

Jungle Fury is an interesting series. Like a few other Ranger series, it was going to be "The End of Power Rangers." (This has never stuck, save for a year post-RPM.) Jungle Fury excels because it's really a smaller character drama with the added bonus of all the expected Ranger special effects and fight sequences. Inspired by various Kung Fu flicks and fighting anime, the story builds quite familiarly till this penultimate episode. Penultimate episodes are usually strong outings for Power Rangers, by way of plot progression, and that's no different here.

Casey, our Red Ranger, is down and out having not earned his Master stripes. Following the advice of Atticus Finch (via Dom/Rhino Ranger who is reading the book at the time of episode), he decides to defy his own master and save Jared, the big bad of the season, who has been possessed by the spirit of Dai Shi all season long (ancient evil, etc. etc.)

The episode is really powerful for a couple of reasons. There's Casey's struggle with himself and figuring out his Destiny. He doesn't know if saving Jared is the right thing to do, but it's what he feels should be done. There's the new/old romance being kindled between Lily (Yellow Ranger) and  Theo (Blue Ranger.) R.J. (Wolf Ranger) continues to dole out his hippy-sage advice, and even Fran gets to play a role managing the team.

In effect, it's a perfect microcosm of the series. And really, that's what each episode of a TV series should do- remind you of the overall plot, while still giving you a fun outing of the story.

Why is this episode not higher on the list?

For all this episode does right (and this season for that matter), there are a lot of issues, especially with the villains and the in-suit fight scenes. When Disney first bought the show, the slow motion effects and less martial arts-based fighting (if that makes sense) were something new and so it didn't really actively hurt the show until around Overdrive. Having the same stuff happen in Jungle Fury is kind of unacceptable, as it's a Kung Fu show!

This episode features an incredibly bad-ass scene of Casey storming the enemy temple, mowing down henchmen. It is incredibly lessened however, because they put in effects over Casey's punches, and not even spiritual-looking Kung Fu effects. He's pretty much just firing off lasers.

This sort of detraction happens throughout the show- you have great character moments, true drama, and then it gets almost completely ruined by slow motion, and laser beams.

Add to that the Phantom Beast Generals (the bigger bosses toward the end of the series' run) are some of the most bland villains we've ever gotten, and it doesn't help matters much. (To be fair, one of the generals is pretty great, but he's already been destroyed at this point in the show.)

Even a bigger let down is Dai Shi, the ancient spirit main villain of the show. Compared to Jared, the human he possesses at the beginning of the season, he is barely a character, and that sort of brings down the episode. We go from dramatic scenes to this guy being evil because....EVIL!

How does this episode possibly influence the movie?

It's by no means a spoiler that the new movie will feature a Rita Repulsa who has a deep link with the legacy of the Power Rangers. (She has the Green Power Coin, and there's no way in hell that she wasn't the original Green Ranger at this point.) The idea of an evil warrior redeeming themselves, or a good warrior falling to the side of evil, is Power Rangers' bread and butter. Tommy, Cat, Trent, Ryan, Jared...there's almost too many to mention. Let's hope that Rita's character arc, her rise and fall, will be treated with the same amount of gravitas as Jared's in this episode. Heck...let's hope it's even better:)

Power Rangers Premier Countdown: 21st place goes to...

Our First Tie!

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Episode 6: Food Fight

-and-

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Episode 8: I, Eye Guy

Why are these episodes among the best? (And why a tie?)

As mentioned before Power Rangers' first couple of episodes existed in a very weird space. It took a long time for the show to figure out what it actually was. (The show didn't really hit any kind of stability until Tommy showed up; sorry to people who aren't Tommy fans.) Food Fight and I, Eye Guy both give you the core essence of Power Rangers- goofy teenage fun, bad puns, weird monsters, and awesome fight scenes. There are few people of the 90s generation who can't remember Pudgy Pig, and to a slightly lesser extent, Eye Guy. Both episodes also feature teenagers in a positive light, both as community activists and mentors to younger kids. It was sort of the in-thing to do at the time.

The episodes are a tie for me because they both showed what Power Ranger is, but they accomplished it in slightly different ways. Food Fight has Bulk and Skull buffoonery, and the team using their smarts to beat the monster. I, Eye Guy has weird technology, and incredibly bad Eye puns. (Eye, Eye!) How can you choose?

Why are these episodes not higher on the list?

As I said above, and in the first post about Day of the Dumpster, the first bit of Power Rangers was in a weird place. Food Fight has very weird camera angles, and even weirder reactions from the extras involved in the titular food fight. I, Eye Guy has a child actor being dubbed by a voice actor, a staple of the series. While the dubbing is not bad at all, the voice just doesn't match with the character and it completely takes you out of the episode. Plus...how is anything at that science fair related to science?
The episodes manage to stand out because of their monsters, more so than the human characters, and that prevented them from being higher up on the list. Nostalgia can only go so far.

How do these episodes possibly influence the new movie?

Food fight gives us another staple of the Power Rangers franchise- farce, and I, Eye Guy gives us yet another- outlandish inventions made by kids. We know there's a cafeteria scene in the film where food is exploding, and we know that Billy build at least two explosive devices. There's definitely a connection there.

Power Rangers Premier Countdown: 22nd Place goes to.....

Power Rangers Operation Overdrive Episode 25: "Things Not Said"

Why is this episode one of the best?

It should be no surprise to anyone that Operation Overdrive sits at the bottom of the pile for me when it comes to ranking Power Rangers seasons. (That's not to say that the show doesn't have its fans, because it certainly does.) But every season of Power Rangers has its bright points. Overdrive's brightest points were always the relationship between Red Ranger, Mack and his Alfred-esque Butler, Spencer.

Things Not Said goes from being your standard Overdrive fare into a very heartfelt character drama. The revelation that Mack, arguably the most human of the group, is an Android created by his father hit a lot of people hard when the show first aired. Mack has to face not only the fact that his entire life is a lie, with programmed memories thanks to his dad, but that he may be a liability on the battlefield if he shuts down. It takes Spencer to remind him that Mack is who he is in spite of being an Android.

This revelation is something that the series builds to for a long time, and is really one of the better season-long plots Power Rangers has produced. What makes it even better is that a few episodes prior, (Once a Ranger, another of the better Overdrive episodes, if just because of the return of old rangers.) it is Mack who doesn't want to give up being a Power Ranger, while his teammates sort of just casually go back to what they were doing before.

Perhaps the best part of the episode is the amount of shade Mack gets to throw at his dad. And yeah, he gets his Battleizer too. I call that a win/win.

Why is this episode not higher up on the list?

As well executed as the episode is with Mack's story line, it still manages to be bogged down by the things that plague Operation Overdrive over the length of the series. The rangers, besides Mack could not be more wooden, both in writing and the way they are portrayed. The villains (Kamdor and Miratrix for this episode) fair a little bit better because they get to emote, but they're still very one-note. Dr. Hartford will always be my least favorite character to watch. He's not all that wooden necessarily, but he's just not a likable character, especially in this episode when you realize he expects his son to forgive him so easily. (Still waiting for a spin-off with Mack and Spencer going on awesome adventures.)

I think the thing that bothers me most, for this episode in particular, is that Tyzonn gets sidelined for no reason whatsoever. (I mean, there was a reason in Boukenger, but that's besides the point.) He just kind of stands there...cheer leading. And then they throw him in the middle of the lineup when Mack can't be there...but he's barely holding together being a cheerleader.

How does this episode possibly influence the new movie?

Like all the Power Rangers series past In Space, we're likely going to have some sort of nod to Overdrive's focal city. (San Angeles, if memory serves me. They don't mention it as much as other towns.) Beyond that, there's the rumors that the film will feature the rangers trying to stop Rita from gathering certain valuable things, much like in Overdrive's entirety. Hopefully the movie will also be able to pull of the kind of character drama seen in this episode, especially with Jason and his accident or incident that they've hinted at in the trailers.

Power Rangers Premier Countdown: 23rd Place goes to.....

DISCLAIMER:

So before we go to the episode, I just want to address what we're actually doing here. This series of blog posts will serve as a countdown to the premier of the Power Rangers movie due out on March 24th, 2017. We're only going to 23, because the movie is technically available for viewing to most on the 23rd.

As there is a ridiculous number of Power Rangers episodes, this list merely comprises episodes that fellow fans sent in as their favorites, and some of my own. Taking those, I graded them from 23 to 1, and each day I will post a short review on each one until we get to the film.

Enjoy, and feel free to leave a comment either agreeing with me or calling me out for my idiotic opinions!

MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS EPISODE 1: "Day of the Dumpster"

Why is the episode one of the best?

I think few people who grew up in the 90s exist in the world today that haven't seen this episode in some form or fashion. It is the progenitor of the Power Rangers phenomenon as we know it. It's simple, it's fun, it has likable characters, and it all comes served with a side of cheese.

Power Rangers, by its very definition, should not work. It involves gathering two very disparate groups of footage, cutting them together, and praying that the end result is something approaching worthy. Day of the Dumpster showed the world that not only could this show work, but it could be an icon of the era.

Also interesting note, and I only realized this upon my recent re-watch, up until all the Zyuranger footage kicks in, Billy is kind of the main character, at least for this episode. Go figure:)

Why is this episode not higher up on the list?

The 90s was a great time for television. It was not however, a great time for television production value. Kids are rather spoiled nowadays with the technology that goes into making television. Power Rangers, for all its good points, was filmed on VHS tapes, and production has and always will be more rushed than one would hope. The first couple of episodes of this season had some really weird, if still impressive, displays of martial arts. They were still figuring out how to do this show, and so Day of the Dumpster doesn't really have anything in the way of impressive set pieces.

Day of the Dumpster also moves fast. Too fast in my opinion. Watching it as a little kid, you kind of just accept what is happening without much thought, as it also keeps your attention quite nicely. The episode works as a pilot, in that it shows off what it can do as far the rangers' powers and tech are concerned, but it does nothing to actually introduce us to any of the characters. (We never find out who Zordon is.....we just know he's a space wizard, and episode 1 doesn't even really give us that.)

Really all we get from the first episode is the characters' archetypes. Nothing really beyond that.

How does this episode possibly influence the new movie?

While this is pretty obvious, the new movie will take a lot of its cues from Day of the Dumpster. It will do things extremely differently, but from all the trailers we have, the bullet points are all the same, as they are for most seasons of Power Rangers. Aliens (or otherwise) attack the Earth, mentor calls upon our heroes to save the world, some are unsure, some are all for it. They get their powers, they start saving people.

Long time no see/Super Sentai 2017 rumors begin

Hey all. I apologize for my lack of my posts. Things have been busy lately and with Morphicon coming up I've pretty much spending all my team either working, acting, or both. Hopefully though I'll be making more frequent updates from now on.

Okay, on to the rumor. I stumbled upon this on a Japanese blog/message site and while it likely is completely false, it was interesting so I figured I'd share.

As always, PLEASE TAKE ANY RUMORS WITH A BIG GRAIN OF SALT.

"The 2017 Super Sentai has been decided. It will be titled "Sorayuu Sentai Eabinjya" 空郵戦隊エアビンジャー, or "Sky Mail Task Force Air Letter Ranger."

The motif is split between Post Delivery Workers and Birds, and will be the first Bird-themed Sentai since Jetman 26 years ago.

(2017 is also the year of the Rooster in the Chinese Zodiac. It has been surmised by some fans that each sentai series throws in at least one mecha to represent the Zodiac animal of that year.)

Again, grain of salt.

So what do you think? Ridiculous, impossible, interesting?
Let me know in the comments what you think of the rumor, or
what you would like from Sentai 2017.
